The Struggles Of Writing About Chinese Food As A Chinese Person

Lorraine Chuen’s Story

While browsing on Facebook once, Lorraine Chuen, a Chinese, noticed that there was an argument going on between two persons. One of them claimed that food feels political for people of color. Cheun was interested in finding out whether this is true or not. This thing hit her mind until some days, and she was in doubt whether structural oppression exists or not.

Chuen’s Findings

After in-depth research, Chuen gathered some facts and conclusions. In the New York Times, there were 263 entries under the section of “Chinese Recipe.” She gathered facts about the authors who wrote those articles. She found that 90%t of them were white authors.

Moreover, she did in-depth research on each author’s ethnicities. She listed them among the public. Many of these authors questioned her on their ethnicities.

Chinese: Food and People

Food in China was not that popular earlier. People found it very strange. But after 2006, many travel shows came up. They started highlighting their country and cuisines. Before that, some felt that people were afraid of the ingredients used in dishes. Chinese felt awkward to talk or write about their food for this reason. In 2006, Jonathan Gold won the Pulitzer Prize as a food critic. He had mentioned some foods in his works. If you go through the ingredients of the diet of a Chinese, then you may come across duck, goose, etc. That is the reason you may find their food items strange.

Common And Uncommon Foods

There are certain foods in China which you can find around many countries. Some of them are noodles, kebabs, rice bowls, momos, etc. These are normalized food items. But a significant part of these is yet not accessible because the White people are not sure about their likeness for those items. You will hardly find a cookbook with all the real Chinese food items’ information. Through Marco Polo, the ham-making technique traveled from China to Europe. China people claim that many techniques and processes related to ham processing got inspiration from the China method of food preparation. The editors get inclined to the statements of those recipe makers, whose mindsets match with them. Still, today, if anyone sees a Chinese eating jellyfish or bamboo shoots, he/she feels weird because other people around the world hardly use those ingredients in their food items. Nobody tries to interview an Asian person. Instead, journalists take an interest in White people. Today people from America and Europe are opening up China restaurants and making a lot of money out of it. However, a Chinese is unable to do so because he doesn’t know how to showcase trends or fashion through restaurants.

Conclusion

Though the food of China is popular throughout the world, a Chinese person faces difficulty in writing about others. This difficulty arises because people are more interested in listening to the reviews and ratings of White people, no matter whatever item it is.
