Western Chinese Cuisine originated in San Francisco, California. This friendly eatery on the second floor, offers a wide array of authentic Chinese dishes with many international influences. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, the atmosphere at Goldmark’s is relaxed, with staff and chefs speaking English. Although not located in an “American” restaurant, the majority of Western Chinese food can be ordered from the main level and prepared according to Chinese custom. Here are some of our favorites:
With its location in the centre mall of San Francisco, Golden Gate points proudly to three locations that serve authentic Chinese food – in addition to a large number of authentic Szechuan dishes. The restaurant starts out with dim sum, with a focus on seasonal delights made from Szechuan-style ingredients like oyster and scallops. The savoury dishes are subtly prepared using a blend of Szechwan-style and Chinese traditional cooking techniques. A special seasonal fruit dish is also available at certain times of the year.
Located at the top of Orchard Street is the small diner known as the Cinnamon Bun, where you’ll find some excellent xia jiao, or sweet and sour pork, a favourite of travellers on a diet. Unlike most Chinese restaurants, where the portion sizes are larger, the smaller nieces and nephews at Cinnamon Bun are given generous servings, with forks and knives for the full enjoyment of the flavoursome pork dumplings. While many diners will prefer the large versions, with beef and chicken meat, the smaller ones are wonderful for those who are looking for a simpler taste with less fat. If you want to explore flavours in greater depth, the nieces and nephews at the Cinnamon Bun can also prepare some light salads, using roasted radishes, mango and carrot for the base of the salad, and are adding a hint of sour cream and sesame oil to highlight the flavours.
Healthy Variation Of Chinese Food
Of all the famous, traditional Chinese foods on display in Columbus, there is one that is by far the most popular – the pork chop. Originating from the Szechwan province of China, the pork chop is prepared using boneless, skinless beef, cooked by allowing it to marinate overnight in a mildly seasoned stock made from vegetables and herbs. After the meat has marinated, it is ready to be carved into thin strips, allowing the marinade to infuse the meat with its flavour. At this point, it is usually served along with spring rolls or raw vegetables. The word “pork” in Chinese is not used to refer to any one single meat, but to describe any cut of meat used to make the dish. The word for “chop” in Chinese is ping, which means “little finger.”
Probably the best known Chinese dish in Columbus is the signature rice pilaf, which are a multi-course feast consisting of dishes cooked with different varieties of rice, and ending with a dessert consisting of cooked rice and meat. Typically, the main courses are made with duck or chicken, and often pair well with duck or chicken liver. On occasion, however, you will find pork, beef, or seafood incorporated into the main courses, and the desserts are almost always a variation on cakes or pastries, with peach or lemon being the most popular choice. Although Chinese restaurants in Columbus tend to be more expensive than in other cities, a variety of authentic western, Chinese dishes can still be found if you look hard enough.
If you are looking for noodles to complement your Western Chinese food, you should also try a variety of stir-fried vegetables, such as bean sprouts, radishes, and asparagus. In addition to adding crunchy texture and flavor to your meal, these vegetables will also add a bit of extra zip to your diet! For an added treat, try serving egg rolls or crab cakes.
