What is Chinese Garlic Chicken

A close up of food

A flavorful dish that is quick to make, this dish is made with chopped garlic, chicken, and soy sauce. It’s served with steamed rice and vegetables on the side.

Chinese Garlic Chicken Recipe

A plate of food with broccoli

  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 3/4 cup chopped cooked chicken (I like to use a combination of dark meat and white meat)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (salt optional)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or canola oil
  • 1/4 cup water or stock

Some of my favorite veggies to serve this dish with are: broccoli, snap peas, snow peas, water chestnuts (if I happen to have some), mushrooms, carrots, bell pepper, fresh green bean, or just some plain cooked rice.

Use a ziplock bag to mix the cooked chicken with the soy sauce and cornstarch.

Freeze until solid, then cut into pieces about 3/4 – 1 inch x 1/4 inch thick.

Heat oil in a wok over medium-high heat. Add garlic and cook for one minute or less depending on how hot your stove gets (you don’t want to burn it). Transfer out of wok to prevent overcooking the garlic bits.

Quickly stir fry meat cubes until they are no longer pink inside (about 2-3 minutes), then transfer out the wok to prevent further cooking.

Add the water or stock to deglaze the pan inside your wok, making sure you scrape up all those yummy brown bits from your meat and pan bottom.

Add back in the garlic and cooked chicken for 1 minute or so until everything is nice and warm again, then transfer to a plate with some rice on it! I often serve this dish with steamed veggies as well.

Side Dishes for the dish

Chinese Garlic Chicken is a great dish to have because it’s easy to make and can be tailored to what you have on hand. The following recipes are some other ideas that work well with the chicken:

Sesame Green Beans:

Stir fry green beans with sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and soy sauce until tender-crisp.

Egg Drop Soup:

Boil chicken broth, 2 beaten eggs, 1 tbsp of cornstarch, and scallions together in a pot. Pour into bowls to serve.

Hot & Sour Soup:

Fry white pepper, vinegar, green onion, salt, and sugar together in a pan for seasoning. Add pork bones or pre-made soup base to hot water along with carrots, celery, and cabbage to make the soup. Serve hot with rice on the side.

Pork Fried Rice:

Make fried rice by frying onions in margarine then adding cooked vegetables that are chopped (carrots are good) and meats (shrimp, chicken, or pork) to the pan. Add cooked rice and stir until fully mixed through. Season with soy sauce if desired.

Egg Foo Young:

Beat eggs with water. Stir fry cabbage, green onions, carrots, and bean sprouts in a pan then add beaten eggs to the top of the veggies when it looks about half done. Cook more than serve on a plate or put into an omelet shape and flip over for a unique egg foo young dish which is also unique and fun!

Baked vegetables, rice, and noodles are some of the most popular dishes to serve with Chinese garlic chicken. However, we also recommend serving a side dish that is new and different for your diners. Why not try fried green beans? Or if you want something more substantial than just a vegetable, how about mashed potatoes or steamed white rice? Whatever it is you decide on as an accompaniment to this delicious meal will be sure to please!
